INSECURITY IN SOMALIA IS HAMPERING AID DELIVERIES

More than 600,000 Somalis are facing a humanitarian emergency, the result of floods late last year. Four counterparts of Oxfam Novib are providing relief to the victims. However, insecurity is hampering their efforts.

The latest bombardment of Afmadow district dates from the end of January. But people are still very wary, according to a staff member of Horn Relief/African Rescue Committee (AFREC). The colleagues at Oxfam Novib’s counterparts are wary, but the pastoralists even more so.

The bombs hit pastoralists extra hard. Serious drought and flooding had already affected them last year. The natural disasters have displaced half a million people. Water levels have dropped in the meantime and agriculture is slowly reviving. But some regions are still difficult to access.

Más de 600,000 habitantes de Somalia enfrentan una grave situación de emergencia humanitaria como producto de las inundaciones que acaecieron a finales del año pasado. Las cuatro contrapartes de Oxfam Novib brindan ayuda a las víctimas. No obstante, la inseguridad que impera en la zona impide que estos esfuerzos se materialicen.

El último bombardeo en el distrito de Afmadow se vivió a finales de enero. Pese a ello, la gente sigue aún sintiendo pavor; tal como lo testificara un miembro del personal de Horn Relief/ African Rescue Committee, el cual se conoce por sus siglas AFREC en inglés. Los colegas de las contrapartes de Oxfam Novib sienten un aterrador miedo, pero este negativo sentimiento es aún mucho más latente entre los pastores.

Las bombas golpearon mucho más, pues las fuertes inundaciones ya los habían afectado el año pasado.
Los desastres naturales han desplazado a un millón de personas. Entre tanto, los niveles de agua han disminuido y la agricultura atraviesa un lento proceso de reactivación. Pese a ello, el acceso a algunas regiones sigue siendo difícil.
